Official language of Portugal is Portuguese, some other languages such as English, German, Spanish and Italian is also spoken in country. Portuguese is Romance originated that is now Northern Portugal and Galicia. Portuguese is derived from Latin spoken by Romanized that are Pre-Roman people of Iberian Peninsula around 2000 years ago. Language spread worldwide in 15 th and 16 th centuries as country was established colonial and commercial empire that spanned from the Brazil in Americans to other parts of Macau in China and India. It was used early as exclusive lingua franca on island of Sri Lanka for 350 years almost.
 
 

It is today, one of the major languages of world; it is ranked at 6 th according to the native number speakers. It is language of half of South America, though Brazil is only Portuguese speaking nation in Americas. Major lingua in Portugal is former colonial possession in the Africa, Portuguese is official in nine countries, and co-official with Chinese in Chinese administrative region of the Macau, Spanish, in east Timor and French in Equatorial Guinea. Many sizeable communities are there that are Portuguese speakers in many regions of North America. Today it is official language of Brazil, Angola, Cape Verde, Portugal, Guinea and Mozambique.

 

Small communities of Portuguese speaking subsist in the former colonies of Portugal, it is such as Macau, and spoken by 7% of population, East Timor 20%, Uruguay gave equal status to Portuguese to Spanish in the educational system at north border with Brazil, rest of country is taught as obligatory subject in beginning by 6 th grade. Portuguese is official language of European Union, it is accounting for 3 percent of population, organization of America, organization of Ibero States, Union of American Nations and African Union. There has increasing interest in study of this language in South American countries. Application of language is currently assessed by the CPLP members.
